Chapter 16

A Motley Crew

I groaned and turned around. Hope stepped in through the door holding a Book of Mormon. Permelia was right behind her.

“Time for early morning scripture study, big brother.”

When I stepped into the light, Hope gasped. “What happened to your face? That cheek wasn’t damaged when I left it.”

“I had a little un-date with Colt,” I said.

Permelia stepped forward, her eyes bright. “I’m going to go take care of that Colt Mangum,” she said. “He can’t just go around roughing up the eye candy.”

I decided Colt was right. Hitting me was sure to drive him further out of the graces of the eligible women in the ward—even Permelia.

“Leave Colt alone,” I said. “I deserved to get hit, and we’ve come to an understanding.”

“Well, that would be a first,” Permelia said. “Nobody understands that boy.”

“Just let him be,” I said. “He’s a troubled soul.”

“With amazing biceps,” Permelia mumbled under her breath. “I suppose I could give him another chance.”

Permelia and Hope came inside and made themselves at home on the couch. About the same time, Joseph came up the steps, presumably finishing one of his night runs. He had a letter in his hands, and he did not look happy.

“I thought we agreed to no social visits in the apartment,” he said, looking back and forth accusingly between Roger and me.

“Good morning, Brother Joseph,” Permelia said. “It’s so nice to see you too.”

“What’s this all about?” Joseph asked, settling his focus on me.

Before I could reply, Hope jumped in. “We’re here for scripture study,” she said. “Matthew has received an assignment from the bishop to complete the Book of Mormon, and we are going to help him. Would you like to join us?”

“I’ve read the Book of Mormon eighteen times,” Joseph said. “I don’t think I have anything left to learn.”

“Really?” Hope said, returning Joseph’s glare with sweetness. “I’ve read it at least thirty times, and I find something new and inspiring every time I open it up.”

Joseph looked over at me. I shrugged. He was way out of his league, and he knew it. I was really starting to like this woman.

“I found something new in my Book of Mormon once,” Permelia said. “In the Isaiah chapters. It was a piece of beef jerky that I think I once used as a bookmark. Could have been in there for years. It was still edible but a little tough. Kind of like Isaiah, as a matter of fact.”

Joseph rolled his eyes and moved toward the bedroom. One of these women was formidable enough, but two of them together was impossible.

Joseph stopped when he got to his door and hesitated without going in. There was something troubling him, and I didn’t think it was just the company in the apartment.

“What’s up?” I said, moving toward him. “You’ve obviously got something on your mind, so you might as well spit it out.”

He looked down at the letter in his hands. “Someone dropped out of the Uinta 100,” he said. “I’ve been invited to join.
